WALLS AND MURALS
I've spent most of my art career producing paintings in my studio. My process for large-scale work is unique in that I hand-paint my mural comps before I create them on location
When creating public art, I generally work in three phases. First, I create a digital composition to work out the color palette and overall shape. Then, I hand-paint a miniature version to work out the design details and solidify the image. Finally, I color-match my work with lightfast, outdoor house paint, and create the full-size piece on site.
Hand-painting miniatures helps my public art feel more like my studio work-- I find that I take more visual risks and use color dynamically. It also creates a very clear expectation for the client for what the final mural will look like once completed.
